WELCOME TEA 1998   by Ngern Sock Hwee

The event that members have eagerly been waiting for, finally came.  On the 13th of
August 98, more than a hundred people turned up for the welcome tea that was held
at Fuji Ice Palace located at Jurong Entertainment Centre.  The NTU Ice Skating Club
solely booked the rink and it was strictly for members only.

The event started at around 8 p.m.  Everyone simply could not wait to put on their skates and gloves to be out onto the rink.  Once on the ice, those who could skate well simply had a wonderful time showing off their skills.  Some were dancing to the music, while others were just trying their very best to maintain their balance.  For those that could not skate well, a crash course was held to guide and teach them. Cones were set-up isolating an area for committee members to give out skating tips for keen beginners.  These beginners were very enthusiastic in learning despite the number of times they fell.  However, their effort did pay off, because by the end of the night some of them managed to skate without the help of the side-railing and were able to have fun!

Refreshments were provided in the midst of the event where everyone was able to take a breather and re-energised themselves while others took opportunity to make friends before they hit the ice again.  During the event, the music streaming out was an up-tempo kind and it was very obvious that everyone was having a great time.

The highlight of the evening was “Disco on Ice”.  Lights were dimmed and the skating floor was flashing with disco lights, resembling "Zouk on Ice" without the booze!  Nevertheless, everyone was having a fun time dancing to the eighties music.  Well for beginners, some just could not resist the music that they went dancing outside the rink!.  But the event sadly has to come to an end at 11p.m. where the rink has to close...

The welcome tea went on smoothly and many of us had a wonderful cool time.

ICE DANCING   by Benedict Tang

So what exactly is ice dancing?

Encyclopedia Britannica's definition of ice dancing calls it, "the art or sport of dancing on ice using skates."

Though often compared to the pairs skating event, ice dancing and figure skating are really like apples and oranges. Some say ice dancing is just figure skating minus the jumps, but it really is much more than that.

As an event, ice dance grew from ballroom dancing mania in Britain in the 1920s and 1930s. Consequently, the basics of ice dance are ballroom dancing elements.

Try imagining how you would do the fiesta tango while in ice skates, and you'll get a rough idea of where the difficulty lies.  Though they don't jump or spin like figure skaters, ice dancers use the edges of their skates much more, pushing the limits of their own balance for maximum visual effect.

Once you learn to understand and appreciate ice dancing, you'll never skip the ice dancing portion of the Olympics again.  Know that ice dancing is a thriving, legitimate event with its own ice dance stars and favorites.
